ATI Graphics Card Round Up

Top End £200 - £350 or $300 - $600

The big daddy in the ATI line up is the X1900 card; it really is an impressive piece of silicon. The bottom model of this card, the X1900GT costs slightly more than the 7600GT, and yet out performs it by 25%, which isn’t bad when we already know what a good card the 7600GT is. The X1900GT is a new addition to the line-up and is a welcome addition because of the price difference between the X1600XT and the X1900XT.

The next card in the firing line is the X1900XT and what a card this is. Look at the 3D Mark 06 scores below to fully appreciate this card. It outperforms the 7900GT by quite a margin, especially as the higher up we go the tighter the scores tend to get. If you can get a crossfire master card this will mean in the future you can throw in another X1900 and laugh all the way to the game store. There is one more X1900 card and that is the X1900XT-X, apart from there being another X in the title it’s also $60 dollars dearer.

The extra cost doesn’t get you much to be honest and apart from bragging rights, there’s not much point in getting this card. But all these cards don’t touch the 7900GTX both price and performance wise. If you can afford this card get it, if not the X1900XT will do justice to all the latest games. Here are the 3D Mark 06 scores for you to check out:

Top End 3D Mark 06 Scores:

Nvidia 7900GT scores 2226
ATI X1900XT scores 2468
ATI X1900XT-X scores 2584
Nvidia 7900GTX scores 3006

I think if we factor in the prices of these cards the X1900XT offers the best price/performance ratio, however if you are happy to splash the cash then the 7900GTX certainly won’t disappoint. Two of these cards in SLI mode gives you the best possible graphics power available today.
