ATI Graphics Card Round Up

The Future… $700?

With AMD and Intel’s latest processors needing DDR2 you would probably be surprised to hear that ATI won’t be using DDR2 with its latest card, nor will it be using DDR3, in fact it will be the first graphics card maker to use GDDR4 memory – you can’t get any quicker! Also, to add insult to injury it won’t be at a pathetic 1GHz, no, it’s going to run at 2Ghz!

Samsung's new GDDR4 RAM, which runs at an amazing 2GHz!

This really is the future ladies and gentlemen. With two of these put together they crush the Quad SLI of Nvidia. ATI have also, finally, fitted a quiet heatsink and fan combination. ATI have been notorious in the past for bringing out amazingly fast graphics cards with fans that make a 747 jet sound quiet. There’s always one but and here it is: but it costs nearly $700 when it launches later on this month. Ouch!

So we’ve come to the end of this little round-up, I’ve enjoyed finding out more about the cards in both the red and green camps of ATI and Nvidia respectively. I’ve been surprised along the way and pleased by some of the results. My favourite card is still the 7600GT. I use this card in my main system and it handles everything I throw at it. If you’re on more of a tight budget then the X1300 Pro won’t disappoint. Lastly, if you must own the most cutting edge graphics technology get the 7900GTX – it truly is a beast. I’m scared of it and so are most games available on the market.
