Dispelling Hard Drive Recovery Myths
Home : News : News Story

According to DriveSavers, freezing or hitting your failed hard drive can only make things worse.

When it comes to hard drive failures, there are plenty of urban myths floating around. Some claim that freezing or hitting your hard drive will help "unstick" the hard drive heads from the disk platters after a severe crash. The idea is to pop your hard drive in the freezer overnight, then in the morning you take it out and attempt to power it up. According to the myth, the hard drive platters will shrink due to the decrease in temperature, and thus unstick the hard drive head from the platters. According to John Christopher, DriveSavers' Senior Data Recovery Engineer, these methods never work.

“Customers many times can do more harm. You’ve got one copy, one chance… why mess around?” said Christopher.

Some people have even tried buying identical drives on ebay, and then replacing the platters in their bathrooms.

"They think that their pathrooms are cleaner", Christopher commented.
