Boomchair Hands On
Home : News : : News Story

Like your rocking chair, but that goes boom.

When you think of gaming, the last thing on your mind is how comfortable your seat is. That is, until you realize it’s bothering you or gets in your way. Sure, we’ve seen gaming chairs that don’t fit with your scenery quite a few times already, but what if your chair could do more than, well, just rest your behind?

That’s the Boomchair that you must be thinking of. This piece of furniture doesn’t just give you comfort and more freedom of movement while playing your favorite games; it can act as your speaker system for games and music too. It can rumble just like your controller. Best of all is that it can do everything wirelessly.

From what I’ve seen so far, this chair is great in terms of comfort and ease of use. It leans forward and back with a wide range of motion, making it already more pleasant than the standard seat. But the biggest concern that comes to everyone’s mind is what use it has away from the TV.

Obviously, that’s very limited. Newer models now come with headphone jacks and RCA in/out ports so it can be used with an MP3 player too, but no audiophiles will appreciate the stereo sound coming from just behind their ears.

Connecting the chair to your 360 works wirelessly, but at a price. A USB receiver plugs into one of the lonely ports, or you can plug the RCA cables directly into the chair. However, as a fan of surround sound, I cannot recommend using this to anyone who already has some decent speakers simply for that alone.

What could be done is plugging in your music player and having some background noise while playing, instead of using your 360 to do it through those same speakers. That way less stress is put on the 360 and/or your internet connection if you are streaming, as well as giving you your tunes even while playing through whatever adventure it may be.

With 14 different chairs and a pillow looking thing, there is plenty of selection, though most have the same features and are just shaped differently. Half of the Boomchairs are exclusive to particular stores as well, so if you are looking to drop $100+ on one, you’ll need to find the correct outlet too. All of which, of course, are listed on their website.
