PlayStation Eye VS Wiimote: Ingenius Developers
Home : News : : News Story

VR comes to the PlayStation 3 through something other than the Wiimote.

After seeing so much from Johnny Chung Lee, like his amazing Wiimote tricks, it's hard to think of what will come next. So it was surprising to see the next big innovation not from the Wii remote at all, but rather from the PlayStation Eye using modified software on a PlayStation 3 debug kit.

While it's assumed that any standard webcam could do exactly what's seen in the video above, there's no argument that the PS Eye is one of the better webcams around, especially for its price. On top of that, the code that Thomas Miller made is up on the PlayStation's developers network for anyone (with the right tools, ie debug kit) to download and use freely.

Unfortunately, it requires at least two IR sensors to work properly, which in this case were used in the form of goggles. It could work, but that means we'll probably only see it in specialized games this year, hopefully on the PSN. As for full games...we'll have to wait and see. 2009 isn't that far away...
