We recently reviewed the TripleHead2Go system from Matrox, which effectively allows three monitors to display as one. Today Gefen revealed the USB to DVI graphics adapter, which allows you to plug a USB cable from one of the 4, 6 or 8 ports you have, and plug a DVI monitor through the other end.
It seems like a great solution when you're just out of DVI and VGA ports and don't necessarily need an extra two or three extra monitors to attach, like the TripleHead2Go allows. And at $130, it's cheap enough to ensure that two would be a sufficient money saver compared to buying Matrox' hardware.
The display adapter is said to not use up much processing power, and the requirements for using one are 1.2GHz single core and at least 512MB of RAM. Considering one is never enough, we're curious how a PC would hold up with 8 running simultaneously.
Actually, we're curious how it would run using 8 simultaneously while running on quad-SLI/Crossfire with a TripleHead2Go on every available port. That's...8 DVI ports from the GPU's and 8 USB ports, so 16 total. Then, assuming we use the maximum possible resolution for the Matrox hardware we use 24" monitors at 1920x1200, so that's 2 monitors per DVI port...
Yeah, so imagine having 32 24" monitors, all at 1920x1200, running on one machine. Possible? Undoubtedly not, especially considering that the display adapter from Gefen only supports 1600x1200, which would drop the number to 24 displays total. Ambitious? Absofragginlutely.
