Nvidia to introduce Tegra processor, claims to destroy Intel's Atom
I've covered the Nvidia-Intel bashfest for the last three weeks, and speculated on Nvidia's upbeat, child-like happy attitude towards Intel's advances into the graphics world. Intel hasn't made any claims...they've showed the raw data. That data, however, wasn't very much to gawk at.
Nvidia, covered by the Wall Street Journal and announced by Nvidia in a press release, stated that their Tegra processor, made specifically for small devices like phones, is incredibly powerful and still saves power. Here's a quick rundown of the claims off the press release:
"NVIDIA Tegra 650 also features: • All-day media processing, for 130 hours audio, 30 hours HD video playback • HD image processing for advanced digital still camera and HD camcorder functions • Optimized hardware support for Web 2.0 applications for a true desktop-class internet experience • Display support for 1080p HDMI, WSXGA+ LCD and CRT, and NTSC/PAL TV-Out • Direct support for WiFi, disk drives, keyboard, mouse, and other peripherals • A complete Board Support Package (BSP) to enable fast times to market for Windows Mobile-based designs"
Reports from the WSJ say that it lasts 26 hours instead of 30 for HD video playback, but hey, that's a small difference compared to the few we've seen from the Atom and Intel. We'll see if the claims hold water next week at Computex, where the Tegra will be shown publicly.
