Logitech G3 Laser Mouse

As far as your basic gaming performance goes, the G3 is reasonably impressive. With a fast usb connection, and a laser resolution of 2000 dpi, the unit is remarkably sensitive and responsive. A small button directly below the two main ones allows the user to cycle between 5 user-defined sensitivity settings (after you have installed the included setpoint software, which I had to specially request but my rep assures me will be ready by ship date).

This allows on the fly sensitivity switching which can be particularly handy for those FPS sharpshooters out there. The accuracy of the mouse is further enhanced by the Polytetrafluoroethylene gaming feet, which create a minimum of friction on most surfaces. Since the mouse is symmetrical along it’s y-axis and has identical buttons on either side, even you lefties can use the mouse comfortably.

Unfortunately the side buttons are placed where most people would rest their fingers.

Where the G3 ultimately falls a little short is in the basic form factor and construction. First off, the mouse is small. At E3, my rep told me that the unit is purposefully designed at this size to encourage a “claw-style” grip, where the hand is held above the mouse, with no palm contact, and the fingers are used to manipulate it. This grip supposedly allows for easier, and quicker movement of the hand and wrist. Unfortunately, with my larger than average hands (that’s right ladies) I found the claw-style grip to be uncomfortable over long periods of use.

This leads to my second major complaint about the G3: the side-button placement. Because you have to hold the mouse with your fingertips, rather than your palm, your pinky and index finger rest on the sides of the mouse. Unfortunately this is PRECISELY where the side buttons are located. Because of this button positioning, I found myself constantly hitting the side buttons by mistake. I would have preferred the buttons be placed farther forward on the unit, and made a little bit smaller. It can be pretty annoying to keep activating the side buttons during intense game play.
