We review SanDisk's newest USB flash drive aimed at gamers. Yes, that's you!

We recently asked SanDisk if we could take a look at some of their newest USB flash drives aimed at gamers. They kindly obliged, sending us a 1GB drive from their Cruzer Crossfire line, along with a couple other bits and pieces we'll get to later. The Crossfire is, without a doubt, one of the best looking Flash drives on the market today. The attractive white shell reminded me of my iPod Nano. You know, the original Nano, before Apple made them all mettalic-like?

The 1GB white Crossfire, in all its data-storing glory.

The white shell is offset by a nice green trim, not unlike a certain Alienware case, and the green LED that lights up when data is being transferred is rather attractive, too. And the lanyard is a metallic silver piece of work, something I'm proud to wear into the office here at GWN each day. But, what makes this one so suited to gamers?

Keep that cap on when you're not using it, kids!

Well, besides the attractive looks, there's nothing here that really seperates this flash drive from any other. Sure, SanDisk have cleverly marketed the Cruzer Crossfire line to appeal to gamers, but the Crossfire doesn't actually do anything that other flash drives can't. But don't let that discourage you - if you're a gamer and you want a flash drive to save game data, demos, replays or anything else, the Crossfire is an excellent choice. It's simple, affordable, looks fantastic and it just works, as all flash drives should. It's also very useful if you own an Xbox 360 or PS3. You can play MP3s, view photos or videos on your TV, all from the flash drive.

The Crossfire comes in 1GB, 2GB and 4GB versions. The 1GB stick is white, while the 2GB is black, and the 4GB is blue.

It's a Crossfire line-up!

There is also a green 512MB version, but we'd recommend getting at least the 1GB stick since they're so cheap these days. Recommended pricing in the US is shown below. No doubt you could pick them up considerably cheaper at most stores:

  • 1GB ($34.99)
  • 2GB ($49.99)
  • 4GB ($79.99)

SanDisk also sent us a 1GB Cruzer Titanium, which is virtually identical except for a clever hide-away USB connector and a hard metal casing.

SanDisk's Cruzer Titanium. We don't think it's made of real titanium, but the metal casing is plenty strong enough for most gamers!

Last but not least, they also included a Cruzer Profile flash drive of 512MB capacity. This baby is the pick of the bunch if security is your bag. Just swipe your finger over the reader and you (and only you) can see what's inside! At least, that's the theory. Many of these readers can be foiled by photocopying someone's fingerprints (which apparently is more effective than actually cutting off someone's finger - please take note, data thieves). But nevertheless, it's worthwhile investing in one of these if you plan to store anything private on the drive.

If security is of concern to you, be sure to check out the Cruzer Profile. That fingerprint reader may help you sleep at night if you store personal data on the drive.
