Logitech Cordless Precision Controller

The third party weapon of choice.

Setting aside nostalgia and Wii-nsanity for a moment, most gamers might agree that the two most well designed console game pads are Sony's dual shock/SIXASIS and Microsoft's Xbox 360 controller. With so many controllers to choose from, third party companies can only hope to achieve a modicum of that same success with their controller offerings. Understanding that, I recently put the Logitech Cordless Precision Controller for the PS3 through its paces.

Logitech has an excellent track record (at least in my mind) when it comes to offering a competent, third party controller for PCs and game consoles.  The recently released Logitech Cordless Precision Controller for the PS3 will have many gamers experiencing déjà vu.  That's because the latest offering from Logitech is nearly identical in design to its PS2 predecessor.

Fortunately for gamers, that is not a bad thing at all.  Video game controllers rarely fall into that gray area of being average.  Either the form and function are good, or they're awful, the latter meaning that the controller is worthless.  For an example of awful, go play with Nintendo's N64 controller, and you'll quickly see just how much you miss the dual analog sticks of today's controllers.

From a design standpoint, the main differences between Sony's SIXAXIS and this controller is that Logitech often opts for a sexier, curvier look.  The overall feel is heavier than what you get with most other controllers, including Sony's.  Additionally, the wireless functionality performs differently from that of the first party controller.  First of all, there is no option to boot up the PS3 as you can with the SIXAXIS, which can become annoying quickly.

Hey, didn't we meet before on the PS2?
