Alienware m15x

Final Thoughts

Alienware may have had a rough year, partly due to parent company Dell’s interference in the gaming market with their XPS lineup, but the quality of the m15x is remarkable. It was the first PC that I’d run that functioned as I thought a machine should; quick, seamless, and stable. Considering it happened on a Vista machine, I was and remain beside myself.

The three smart bay drives, from top right going clockwise: Blu-ray RW 2x drive, 250GB 5400 RPM hard drive, smart bay battery.

Currently, the other machine I’m testing (to be reviewed shortly) has many of the same characteristics, but the m15x is truly the first machine I’ve tested that made me say “yes” to Vista. Considering that it runs so well on a laptop is extraordinary.

Everything that came with the m15x, including the manual, signed sheet confirming it's testing before being sent out, hat, and a few other goodies.

Don’t take my word for it though. The tests show that if you want a very, very decent gaming machine that you can take with you, the m15x is your best bet. Having spoken with Alienware representatives, they said they had trouble shipping me one out sooner because they were being bought up so fast that their manufacturing plant couldn’t crank out enough! There is no better sign.

In my time with the m15x, people came up to me on university campus asking about it. Normally, all the eye can see is a sea of Macbooks, which are normal at universities, Starbucks, or wherever in Southern California. When I took out the m15x, it drew a crowd. It may have been the giant alien head with glowing eyes, the stunning design, light up keys, bright beautiful screen…nobody could pinpoint what they liked about it exactly. The best response was “it’s daunting”.

And it is. Alienware has successfully made a viable gaming laptop that works for the masses, is customizable to be affordable (and upgradeable) for students or anyone looking to buy a new laptop, or built to play the most intensive games and software applications. All that’s left to be said is that even without having seen the laptop, friends at the post office said, “Shipping to Alienware? Why would you send it back?!” I’ve been trying to answer that ever since.

Highs
Very fast; light for a gaming laptop; excellent benchmark and gaming capability; strong Wi-Fi card; customizable Alien FX; higher-than-average battery life on integrated graphics; a keeper.

Lows
Throttling spares little battery life; touch sensitive controls don't function consistently; keyboard is insensitive at times; Stealth mode appears useless; battery life does not last a short movie; recharging is ridiculously time consuming; on the expens

Final verdict
An excellent gaming platform that can be a suitable laptop PC for people on the go.
