Microsoft introduces its economy answer to 2007's Sidewinder.

Just about a year after the release of their feature rich Sidewinder mouse, Microsoft has decided to offer an “economy” version of their well received product; the Sidewinder X5. With a smoothed out form factor and a much more limited feature set, the X5 is looking to appeal to the more budget minded gamer.

That square near the back of the unit is the "Quick Launch" button.

Appearance:

The X5’s appearance is pretty similar to last year’s Sidewinder. Although angles have been smoothed down, the basic shape hasn't changed much. The entire unit (save for a narrow strip right down the middle) is matte black plastic, with rubberized side panels for grip and moisture resistance. The only real color on the entire unit comes from two lights under the mouse and the three DPI adjustment buttons sitting directly below the rubberized scroll wheel. The active button glows red.

The appearance of the X5 is not particularly remarkable. It is by no means ugly. In fact, I rather like the simplicity of the design. The shape is attractive, giving it an aggressively angled look, and the fact that the only real color comes from the DPI buttons really make that detail stand out.

Slick profile, no?

Performance:

The X5 performs quite well, from a basic gaming standpoint. It is one of the more comfortable mice I have used. The fact that it is larger than most, and has a little more height to it makes it very comfortable for my oversized hands. The main buttons give just the right amount of resistance, and are satisfyingly “clicky” when activated. The scroll wheel feels equally responsive, and is easy to utilize due to its rubberized texture.

The vertically stacked thumb buttons are great!

One of the X5’s more unusual features is its vertical side buttons. Like the older Sidewinder mouse, the X5 features two, vertically stacked nubs that sit next to your thumb. The design of these buttons makes them extremely comfortable to activate, and easy to differentiate from each other simply by feel. They are resistant enough to prevent accidental activation, but very responsive when pressed.
