Rocking with the Rocking V

Playing with the Rocking V at first is like picking up an Xbox or Gamecube controller after spending a year playing nothing but your PS2. It is a little awkward because both the fret buttons and the strum bar have a different feel than the standard controller. The fret buttons stick out much more and feel a lot less clicky while the strum bar feels a lot smoother when strumming up and down.

My problem with the fret buttons is that because they stick out so much, it hinders you when you are trying to slide your fingers around so you can hit the orange and green buttons. This is a pretty big problem on songs like Bark at the Moon, Crossroads, and Cowboys From Hell. The strum bar on the other hand is a nice improvement over the Gibson SG. The sound it makes is a lot less annoying, the metallic look is easier on the eyes, and it doesn’t bounce up and cause you to miss a note when you strum down a little hard.

Make sure you have a replacement strap before you buy this controller.

Just for kicks and giggles I decided to put both the standard guitar and the Rocking V to the test by playing Bark at the Moon on expert with both controllers and comparing the scores.

The Results:

Gibson SG Guitar Controller:
Score: 93527
Notes Hit: 73%

Rocking V Guitar Controller
Score: 89722
Notes Hit: 75%

While one test is not really enough to form a conclusion (and theres no way in hell I’m playing Bark at the Moon on expert 10 times in a row,) I can tell you that the fret buttons on the Rocking V did affect my ability to string together notes and keep up that 4x multiplier, which would explain why I had a better score with the Gibson SG, even though I had better accuracy with the Rocking V.
