Rocking V Guitar Controller

At the same price as the standard Gibson SG, you could be rocking with even more style.

When Harmonix and Red Octane brought us Guitar Hero last year, we were simultaneously treated to one of the greatest PS2 games of all time, as well as one of the coolest console peripherals of all time. The Gibson SG guitar controller was solid, cool looking, had tilt sensors that activated your star power whenever you tilted the guitar vertically, and best of all, it had a freakin whammy bar.

Looking to improve upon near perfection, the peripheral designers over at TAC have created three different guitar controllers for Guitar Hero. This review will be looking at the Rocking V wired controller.

As you can see, the Rocking V is a little bit taller than the Gibson SG.

The Basics

When you first open the box, the first thing you will notice is just how cool the Rocking V looks. Obviously there is the V shape of the guitar which is definitely a lot nicer to look at than the standard Gibson SG controller, but what is even better is the shiny and sparkly paint job that you can get in either red or blue.

Beyond the shape and color of the guitar, there are a couple of other design differences to take note of. On the Rocking V controller, the start button is actually recessed inside the controller so that you won’t accidentally press it while you are rocking out. It is definitely a good idea as I have seen many of my friends accidentally pause the game several times within one song on the standard controller.

However, the trade off with this is that if you ever need to pause the game in the middle of a song, you are going to miss some notes because you are going to have to look at the guitar, find the button, and then press it with your finger instead of just pressing it with the side of your palm like you could with the standard controller.
