Ergonomics

The steering wheel feels excellent in my hands in driving position. The 9.25 inch (23.5 cm) wheel is thick and covered with rubber. All the buttons, the thumb pad and flippers are easily accessible to most sim drivers unless you have the hands of an eight year old. For the average adult, there should be no problem reaching everything without letting go of the wheel completely. The sequential stick shifter is in the expected position to the right of the wheel. I noticed immediately the slightly larger desktop footprint of the RGT CE compared to other wheels.

One of the reasons is a greater distance between the wheel and stick shifter than on the few other systems I’ve seen that are similarly equipped. On the Logitech MOMO Racing Wheel, the shifter is approximately 0.25 inches (0.6 cm) to the right and less than 3.0 inches (7.6 cm) behind the wheel. This allows a user with large enough hands to extend his or her fingers and pull on the shifter without taking the entire right hand off the wheel. That isn’t very realistic, but it does facilitate quicker action in the heat of a hot lap or race when using manual shifting.

Impressive looking wheel.

By comparison, the shifter on the RGT CE is about 2.0 inches (5.1 cm) to the right of the wheel and sits behind it, requiring you to remove your right hand from the wheel to grab the shifter. This is more realistic, perhaps, but a potential disadvantage in close competition. Then again, one could always use the flippers instead, but this difference should be noted.

The tri-pedal base requires more space underneath my desk than a typical bi-pedal base. At first I liked the wider base because is could easily accommodate both of my clown-sized feet (size 13). But the distance between the pedals alarmed me right away as I tried to get a feel for the driving action while warming up. The accelerator and brake are only 1.75 inches (4.4 cm) apart. As a comparison, the same pedals on the bi-pedal Logitech MOMO Racing Wheel are 2.25 inches (5.7 cm) apart. That may seem like a trivial difference, but my gut tells me that in the heat of a long competitive race on a road course, a sim driver with larger than average shoes (like me) could have a problem.
