Installation
The written information accompanying the Cougar boasts plug and play functionality. This is technically true, but it can be a lot more complicated, if you’re determined to tweak every aspect of its capabilities. If so, an engineering or computer programming degree could come in handy. I didn’t have that much time, so I obediently followed the installation steps by first installing all of the software.
Interestingly, after completing the software installation, connecting the throttle to the stick via the provided cable, and plugging the stick into a USB port, I was given one of four options to get started using the fully programmable stick. I found the options as described unique and amusing:
Option #1: I’m a complete beginner – I’ve no idea how to program the HOTAS Cougar, but I just want to get flying. A brief introduction will do.
Option #2: I’m a complete beginner, but I’m keen to have a crack at programming these beauties. Show me how.
Option #3: I’m one of the old school – an original Thrustmaster veteran used to programming the F-22 PRO/F16 FLCS/F-16 TQS controllers. Just tell me what’s different about the Cougar and I’ll take it from there.
Option #4: Now look here. I’m a human, you’re a computer. So just leave the thinking to me and when I need your opinion, I’ll ask for it. Now, if you don’t mind, I’ll take control.
Not being a Thrustmaster veteran (I could never afford one of their controllers) and after getting a peek at what was in store should I choose to write my own profiles in minute detail, I chose Option #1.
