Logitech X-540 Speakers

Finally, there’s my favorite feature, which deserves its own separate mention: the wired control center.  Featuring power, volume, bass level, headphone jack and the switch for the Matrix Mode, all on one convenient little module that you can put on your desk, the control center absolutely rocks.  Besides the convenience of having the major controls in one spot, it’s actually easier to turn knobs when they’re on the horizontal plane of the control center than on the vertical plane of a speaker.

The wired control center, which gives you access to a number of features in useful device.

I do have two complaints about the features, though: first, everything has a wire.  More expensive speaker sets from Logitech feature wireless rear satellites, but I’d love to see these speakers have no wires at all, including on the control center.  Reducing wire clutter is hard enough without throwing wires to seven new items into the mix.  It would also be nice if the cords for the control center and power supply were detachable from the bass unit, for easier transport and storage.

Performance

Now comes the fun part: seeing how those six speakers perform in the real world.  I put the X-540 through three different sound tests: playing MP3s and AACs through iTunes, running sound from Battlefield 2142 and Medieval II: Total War and serving up the audio from the Saving Private Ryan DVD via the VLC Media Player.

I started with iTunes. Setting the speakers to operate in Matrix Mode to take advantage of all six speakers when playing a stereo source, I played back everything from rap to metal to classical and am satisfied with the results.  Overall, the sound is very clear, with a slight emphasis on the mid range tones, but not enough to make the sound muddy.  The bass response from the subwoofer is excellent – it gave a nice boost to rock tracks without getting in the way of the music and gives rap that thump that is such a necessary part to enjoying the music.  At no time did I feel any ear fatigue indicative of harsh frequencies coming from the cones.

The X-540’s subwoofer module features a hefty woofer built into the bottom of the unit.
